In the fall of 2012, I published a book in Dutch, which the photographer Marc De Blieck and I had jointly conceived – a volume of texts and images on the thinking of Jacques Rancière, and how that thought can come to fruition in artistic practice. In doing so, the central question concerns how we discover something that we did not even know could have existed at all. Ideas, knowledge, and ability cannot be taken as our point of departure in that case. But what then? Take, as an example, matter. And the way it, in its resistance, compels us to emancipate ourselves with it, to find an unforeseeable interaction with it.

Hoe ontstaat iets waarvan je niet weet dat het überhaupt zou kunnen bestaan? Deze vraag staat in het centrum van het boek Zien, doen, denken – Jacques Rancière en de kunstpraktijk. Marc De Blieck, fotograaf, en ik hebben het samen geconcipieerd. Met Rancière zou men kunnen antwoorden: niet van ideeën, kennis of kunnen kan je dan uitgaan. Veeleer van de materie bijvoorbeeld. En hoe haar weerbarstigheid je dwingt om je met haar te emanciperen, een onvoorspelbare omgang met haar te vinden.
